Me: omg, i just looked at the full etsy store for that [Omar Little] bib. Lolsville. Her: OOOOH! I want the Steve Martin finger puppet! Me: and frieda kahlo, who could totally get down with don draper! Her: LMAO Me: you know they would — notorious sensualists Her: so true, so true. All they need to do is one of Anais Nin and they could have a “special section”...

Nation Shudders At Large Block Of Uninterrupted... →
Unable to rest their eyes on a colorful photograph or boldface heading that could be easily skimmed and forgotten about, Americans collectively recoiled Monday when confronted with a solid block of uninterrupted text. I love this. Not even a blurb to draw them in. Heheh. (via Instapaper)

Jeff: So...
Omar from “The Wire” just wrote me on Twitter.
I told him how my dad is saying to me, “Omar don’t scare.”
He said, “That’s great – cause he don’t. Tell him I said what up.”
Awesome.
Jill: I cannot stop smiling. Twitter is magic.

Coworker (and father of two) to me (childless)
Him: We're at rainforest cafe. Jealous? Someday you two will also get to frequent such exclusive joints.
Me: I live for the day Chuckie Cheese becomes part of my world. Seriously, though, I hope you and [redacted] are taking notes to share with us noobs when the time comes.
Him: Enjoy your freedom while you can.

Rainy-day housekeeping
Today’s post comes courtesy of my Houston bud Yen, who was “amazed and totally disgusted” to discovered a new twist to the torrents of rain we’ve had the last few weeks. Too, too funny: So I finally decided to get maid service and today was my first appointment.  A mother-daughter team arrived (Terri & Jamie).  Terri was in the hall bathroom and said,...

So it’s happened: At 33, my birthday feels more about aging than it does about gifts, parties, licenses or legality. It’s inevitable, I know, as are the tiny gray hairs I keep discovering and plucking. I suspect I’m too young to feel old … and I don’t really feel that way so much as I feel on the older side of young. Like how I cringe when I see teens wearing shredded...

I feel like I got hit by a truck...
… oh wait, I did get hit by a truck. A Toyota Tundra. Yep. Just headed home from work last month, crossing the street behind the Chronicle building. Heart lifted up because Jeff was finally coming home from the NCAA tournament. I’m halfway across the road, in the crosswalk mind you, when I feel a sharp push… thunk… and I go ass over teakettle to the ground, leaving one...

stobias@wichitaeagle.com: Saw this recipe (and read the blog post) and thought of you. Don't ask me why. ;-) Toffee Butter Crunch Matzoh, http://family.go.com/blog/catherinewman/toffee-buttercrunch-matzoh-924715
cohanj@gmail.com: Love it. Totally not observing Passover this year though -- no Jews to hang with, so I give up. Otherwise I would make this and bring it to a seder. Might send it to my cousin, who's in culinary school, since she is a whiz with the sweets.
stobias@wichitaeagle.com: That could totally be the title of your spiritual memoir: “No Jews to Hang With, So I Give Up.” ;-)

When my cousin was visiting, the rodeo also happened to be in town. We’re country kids, but not really into the steer ropin’, bronc-ridin’ thing. So I almost bagged the idea of dealing with the traffic and crowds just to see some folks in 10-gallon hats and heeled boots. But then the Chronicle ran this photo gallery of strange foods at the Rodeo and it was over. We decided no...

Uncle Pony and Aunt Gucci
A while back, we visited friends Bart and Becky, whose daughter  is just a few months old. Isobelle is one of the most beautiful little people I’ve ever met (no surprise given the good looks and brains that went into her conception). It also doesn’t hurt that she was totally comfortable with me, happy to bounce on my hip, nestle into my shoulder or fall asleep in my arms. I...

How the hell is it March already?
I’ve counted, and I spent one — just one — weekend in Houston in February. And that one weekend was way more social than usual, so it almost doesn’t count (it certainly doesn’t count for the long-and-growing list of house things I need to do, like find an effing recycling center that takes glass and shred the pile of junk mail that’s been accumulating since...

One soulful dude
I can’t get enough of this. Why doesn’t the pop star du jour ever sound nearly as good? Maybe because they’re autotuned to death with no real message in the music? Just a guess.

Home-ish or home-y, or whatever you call a place...
Hubby and I went back to Wichita this weekend for a brief visit. Houston has been relatively easy to settle into, but I’ve missed the extremely comfortable lifestyle we had in the ‘Ta. When I told BFF Shea this, she asked me if I miss the place or the people. When I lived there, I would’ve said the people — no question. But being away makes me see it differently. In the...

Reading list: Age 12
My mom called this weekend to say she’d been hunting through the boxes of old junk she stores at her cabin in Vermont (as opposed to the old junk in the filing cabinet at her house in Savannah) and she was sending me a care package. My mom operates in declarative sentences, not in explanations. So it’s just “I put some stuff in the mail to you.” Not “I sent you x, y...

Grumble, grumble, YELP, grumble
That, my friends, is what my stomach has been saying for the last five hours. The “yelps” recently faded to mere groans, thanks to some drugs and peppermint tea (thank you, Walgreens and Celestial Seasonings). I shouldn’t be bitching about having a mild bout of food poisoning on a Friday night. It was my choice to observe that the sour cream on my barbecue chicken topped baked...

I’m back there again. Lonely. Moving to a new city always does this to me eventually. I go through a cycle: Adrenaline rush of new place, which will be better than old place because it has more/better x, y or z. “Oh shit!” realization that new apt/house will require all sorts of new purchases (this is followed by happy shopping dance and much later by sad credit-card-balance...

Why hello, down comforter. Haven’t see you in months. You look good. … Really good. Have you been going to the dry cleaners? What’s that? You want to envelop me in warm, soft, gauzy goodness? I guess that would be OK … just don’t tell my husband.

Losing it ... or not
College BFF: Last time I lost weight but didn't tone. The middle NEEDS the toning.
Me: "Yoga for Abs" will be perfect for you. The instructor looks like a surfer dude and you do bridges and stuff that really works the middle. It's only mildly painful :)
College BFF: Pain might be good. Last time I was careful with myself forever and only realized later that that doesn't make you feel better.
Me: Isn't it funny how we so easily push our brains, but have trouble remembering the body lessons? Every time I go off the wagon, I feel like (**bleep**). And then I start again and the endorphins are amazing.
College BFF: I just ate pastry while watching "The Biggest Loser." And it wasn't even good pastry.

My husband is in this book!*
*I’m proud, proud, proud. But you should know his story isn’t published. It’s mentioned under “notable” pieces that the editors would’ve liked to include and didn’t have room. Here’s the credit page: And here’s the close-up: Jeff’s listed right next to his KC Star colleague Bill Reiter, but most of the notables are from...
